(Columbia, SC) In cooperation with the Church World Service Harvest Hope Food Bank will organize the 2009 Midlands 5K Crop Walk on Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the State House. Registration starts at 1:00 p.m. for the 5K walk which begins and ends on the State House grounds. Hundreds of compassionate Midlands residents have already pre-registered for the community based fundraising walk, which will raise awareness and funds for local and international hunger relief programs. 75% of funds generated by the event will go to Church World Service international hunger relief efforts and 25% will go to Harvest Hope Food Bank.

“The persistence of hunger has a devastating effect on individuals, families and communities locally, nationally and internationally,” said Harvest Hope Food Bank CEO Denise Holland. “We are proud to partner with a far reaching organization like the Church World Service to do our part in bringing hunger relief not only to our own community but also to economically impacted areas crossing all borders.”

Harvest Hope Food Bank encourages anyone wishing to do their part in alleviating hunger in the community and around the world to register on the State House grounds and participate in the walkathon, expected to last approximately two to three hours. Each year some two million CROP Walkers, volunteers, and sponsors around the country put their hearts and soles in motion, raising over $16 million per year to help end hunger and poverty around the world -- and in their own communities.

Headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana, Church World Service works with partners around the world, to eradicate hunger and poverty and supports sustainable grassroots development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance, as well as educate and advocate on hunger-related issues. Church World Service in the U.S. helps communities respond to disasters, resettle refugees, promote fair national and international policies, and provide educational resources.

Harvest Hope Food Bank will hold the 5K CROP Walk walkathon to relieve community and world hunger on Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the State House. For information call Ambra McGuinn at (803) 254-4432 x 2105.
