Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Boy Scouts are generally out doing good in the community on any given weekend and this one was no exception.
Packs and troops around the Midlands were scouting for food all day, rounding up canned goods and non-perishable food from folks and donating it to Harvest Hope.
"It's a lot of fun for the boys," says Fred Leonard, with Cub Scout Pack 388, "This is a continuing program that the scouts have been doing and our pack and troop have been doing it for a number of years and have gotten a lot of good participation from the boys."
As Leonard loaded up the bags, and bags, his boys collected to donate, he thought about the joy they get from helping others. "They do understand that. I don't know how desperate they think some people are," he says, "I don't think they have a real good sense of the real need that they're helping to fill."
It's a need that Amy Lowery, with Harvest Hope, sees every time someone walks through their door. "We always appreciated anything that they community can do and come out and support us. One in four children go to bed hungry every night. So it's real important, the statistics are just staggering," she explains.
And no matter how much they realize it, Leonard's Scouts helped out in a big way, collecting 545 pounds of food. "I think that's more than we had last year, which, that surprises me," he says.
It's growth that he and Lowery hope will keep going, all thanks to the Scouts.
In all, the 15 packs and troops that participated collected over 3,000 pounds of food to donate. If you'd like to donate to Harvest Hope, call them at 803-254-4432 to find out how. http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=84272
