FAQ

Food Pantry FAQs

What if I live outside your service area?

No worries! There are food pantries across South Carolina that partner with other food banks and organizations. Check out this resource map from SC DHEC to find food pantries in other areas.

Who does a food pantry serve?

Food pantries are an emergency service for anyone in a financial crisis who cannot afford food.

Food pantries provide groceries for people who are at risk of hunger, people who might otherwise have to choose between buying food and paying for medication, rent, or transportation to a job.  Most food pantry clients only need help temporarily – often over a period of a month or less – because they lost a job or have medical issues.

Food pantries help prevent a temporary crisis from becoming a permanent condition.

What do I need to bring with me?

You should go to a pantry in the county where you reside. You’ll need to present your current picture ID, with your current physical address and birthdays for everyone in the household. If you do not have a current ID, you will receive donated food only and won't be eligible for certain types of government commodity foods.

Do I need an appointment?

Nope! You can come anytime during a food pantry's hours of operation. We make every effort to ensure that our list of partner agencies is up-to-date, but we encourage you to call first to verify the hours of operation.

How much food will I get?

Each pantry varies in how much food they can provide, but you'll get a few days worth of non-perishable and perishable groceries such as fruit, vegetables, bread, meat, and dried goods. Our partners must follow strict safety guidelines, so you can be confident serving your family any food you receive. Food pantries occasionally have personal care supplies in addition to food for clients who need them.

How often can I come?

Food pantries vary in how often they allow clients to come. Call your local pantry and ask if you're not sure!

How do I apply for SNAP?

SNAP benefits are managed through South Carolina DSS. Apply for SNAP in person, by mail, or online.

What if I need more than food?
