As summer winds down and families settle into a new school year, many are looking for meaningful ways to spend time together. One of the most rewarding ways families can connect- during summer and throughout the year- is by volunteering together.

As Harvest Hope's Community Engagement Manager, I have the privilege of welcoming hundreds of volunteers through our doors each month. One of my favorite sights is watching young volunteers discover that they have the power to make a real difference in someone else's life.

Volunteering teaches lessons that can't always be found in a classroom. It helps children develop compassion, responsibility, teamwork, and an understanding of the challenges many families face right here in our own communities. Whether they're sorting donated food, packing emergency food boxes, organizing pantry shelves, or preparing food for distribution, every task they complete helps ensure that a neighbor has food on their table.

Parents often tell us that volunteering together has become one of their family's favorite traditions. It's an opportunity to unplug from screens, spend quality time together, and create lasting memories while giving back. Even a few hours can leave a lasting impression on a young person and inspire a lifelong commitment to serving others.

Young people have so much to contribute. When young volunteers walk through our doors, they quickly learn that kindness does not require a title or position- it only requires a willingness to help.

At Harvest Hope, we believe that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Through volunteering, children can begin to understand the importance of compassion, community, and the role they can play in helping others.

As families settle into a new school year, I encourage them to make service part of their routine. Whether it's during a free weekend, a school break, or a few hours spent together, volunteering can be an opportunity to teach the next generation that helping others is one of the greatest investments we can make in our communities.

Thank you to every volunteer, parent, grandparent, and young person who chooses to spend their time making a difference. Your compassion fuels our mission of providing food, hope, and dignity to our neighbors facing food insecurity.
